Apple has said sorry for its privacy practices of secretly having human contractual workers listen to personal recordings of clients talking with its Siri virtual assistant to improve the service. “We understand we haven’t been completely satisfying our high goals, and for that, we apologize,” Apple’s announcement reads.
Apple had several contractual workers listening to Siri in a procedure called ‘grading,’ yet the organization suspended the program half a month back, after reports that contractors could be hearing pieces of chats. That will, come the fall, continue, yet in a very different manner.
For a start, audio recordings of Siri collaborations will never again be retained by default. Rather, Apple will keep producing automatic transcriptions of Siri collaborations, which have no human segment and utilize those to improve the assistant. Those transcripts will be saved for six months most probably and associated distinctly with a random identifier and not a client’s Apple ID.
Second, clients will be able to opt in to help Siri virtual assistant enhancing by learning from the audio samples of their requests.
